WHEN IS THE 2021 INDY HALF MARATHON AT FORT BEN?

Planning is underway for the 2021 Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben with the goal of returning to the Fort Benjamin Harrison Historic District on Saturday, October 2, 2021. We are working closely with the City of Lawrence and the City of Indianapolis, including the Marion County Public Health Department, to safely produce an in-person race experience for participants, spectators, and the Indianapolis community.

WHAT ARE THE RACE START TIMES?

8:00 a.m. – Half Marathon Start
8:25 a.m. – 5K Start
11:00 a.m. – Kids One Mile Run Start

HOW CAN I STAY INFORMED ABOUT THE EVENT AND MY RACE?

We encourage you to follow us on FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, and TWITTER and check your email regularly for updates leading up to the Indy Half at Fort Ben and 5K.

WHAT HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE?

The following health & safety precautions will be in place for the 2021 Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben*:

  • The event will be limited to 2,000 participants
  • Packet Pickup is set up to allow for socially distancing
  • Race Day activities are outdoors and the Race Site allows for social distancing
  • Announcements will be made frequently asking that anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 leave the Race Site immediately
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be available at Packet Pickup, Gear Check, and throughout the Race Site
  • Disposable masks will be available at Packet Pickup, Gear Check, the Finish Line, and other locations around the Race Site
  • Race officials and volunteers will be encouraged to wear masks during the event
  • Participants will be encouraged to wear masks before and after the race, including up to the start line and after finishing the race
  • We will encourage spectators to wear masks and social distance in all pre-race and race-day communications
  • Bottled water will be provided in the finish chute and Post-Race Celebration
  • All participants, volunteers, and race staff will be logged for contact tracing

*All health and safety precautions are subject to change and will follow all relevant recommended guidelines in place at the time of the event.

IS THE RACE DEFINITELY HAPPENING IN PERSON THIS YEAR? 

We are planning an in-person race experience. We are working closely with the City of Lawrence to safely produce an in-person race experience for participants, spectators, and the Indianapolis community. If anything changes for any reason, we will notify all participants as soon as possible. Please continue to keep up to date with information through email and social media.

WHAT IS THE CAPACITY LIMIT THIS YEAR?

The field size will be reduced by 25% from what we would have in a typical year. While details of the events are still being finalized, we’re optimistic about the fall racing season and look forward to hosting in-person events. We will keep everyone posted on field size and other information about the events as we get closer to event weekend.

WILL YOU BE REQUIRING VACCINATIONS, TEMP CHECKS, OR HEALTH SCREENINGS?

At this time, participants will not be required to submit proof of vaccination nor will they be required to submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test. Prior to and on race day, we ask that any participants or spectators experiencing a cough, fever, shortness of breath, or any other symptoms of illness stay or go home for the safety of themselves and others in the community. We encourage anyone that is eligible to receive a vaccination to do so.

WHAT TIME ZONE IS INDIANAPOLIS?

Eastern Time Zone – Indianapolis uses Eastern Standard Time (EST) during the winter months and Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) in the summer months when Daylight Saving Time is in force.

All events will take place in HISTORIC FORT HARRISON on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

WHERE IS THE RACE START LINE?

The start line is located on Lawton Loop Drive East, just north of Otis Avenue.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR ONLINE REGISTRATION?

The deadline for online registration for the Indy Half Marathon, 5K, and Kids One Mile Run is September 30, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

WHERE CAN I PARK ON RACE WEEKEND?

The main parking lots for the race are at the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center, located at 8899 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46216. Use your favorite map application to get directions from your starting location on race morning to the Bean Federal Center. Parking is FREE and will be available in the Bean Center Parking Lot and designated overflow lots.

We recommend you review the RACE DAY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS prior to race morning.

We also recommend that you review the PARKING MAP prior to race morning.

Traffic from the north is historically heavy on race morning. Plan to arrive no later than 7:00 a.m. to avoid the heaviest traffic congestion.

Please follow the directions provided by police officers and parking lot volunteers.

HOW MUCH DOES PARKING COST?

Parking is FREE at the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center and designated overflow parking lots.

WHERE IS THE RACE SITE IN RELATION TO THE PARKING AREAS?

The race site is a 5-10 minute walk from the Major General Emmett J. Bean Center PARKING LOT AND DESIGNATED OVERFLOW PARKING LOTS. Follow signage as you walk north from your selected parking lot and obey traffic signals as you cross 56th Street to get to the race site.

WHERE CAN I WATCH THE RACE?

The start and finish area is a great place to watch the race and you can easily get to 56th street to see the participants as they come down the street at mile 4.5. Check out the COURSE MAP to find other places to watch the race, keeping in mind there will be road closures to vehicle traffic before and during the race.

We will communicate health and safety guidelines for the Half Marathon at Fort Ben, 5K, and Kids One Mile Run as we get closer to the event.

MAY I UPGRADE OR DOWNGRADE MY ORIGINALLY REGISTERED EVENT?

Log in to your BEYOND MONUMENTAL PARTICIPANT ACCOUNT to upgrade to the Half Marathon or downgrade to the 5K, subject to availability. You are required to pay the price difference to upgrade your race registration. We do not offer refunds to downgrade your race registration.

You may upgrade/downgrade your race registration online until Friday, September 10, 2021.

WHAT IS THE REGISTRATION CUTOFF TO HAVE MY NAME PRINTED ON MY BIB?

You must be registered by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2021, to have your name custom printed on your bib number. This is for all participants in the Half and 5K events. Your name will not be custom printed on your bib if you modify your race registration after the deadline.

MAY I TRANSFER MY ENTRY TO SOMEONE ELSE?

Yes. There is a $20.00 fee to transfer a registration. Log in to your BEYOND MONUMENTAL PARTICIPANT ACCOUNT and select the “Transfer an Existing Entry to a New Registrant” option. Once you transfer out, you will receive a transfer code via email to give to the new participant to transfer in. The deadline to transfer out of the race is Friday September 10, 2021.

MAY I GET A REFUND FOR MY ENTRY?

No refunds will be issued for any reason. This is a standard industry policy and is not unique to our event.

WHAT IF THE EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

If the in-person event is cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, registered in-person race participants will be able to choose one of the following options based on when the event cancellation occurs*:

  • If the in-person event is cancelled prior to April 30, 2021, participants may choose to have their in-person race registration fee:
    • Refunded in full, less any processing fees
    • Converted from in-person registration to virtual registration**
    • Deferred to 2022 event registration (no extra fee to participate in 2022)
    • Donated to support MONUMENTAL KIDS MOVEMENT
  • If the in-person event is cancelled May 1, 2021-August 15, 2021, participants may choose to have their in-person race registration fee:
    • Refunded 50%, less any processing fees
    • Converted from in-person registration to virtual registration**
    • Forfeited to support Beyond Monumental and receive 50% off 2022 registration fee
    • Donated to support MONUMENTAL KIDS MOVEMENT
  • If the in-person event is cancelled August 16, 2021-Race Week, all in-person race registrations will be converted to virtual race registrations**

*Applies to in-person event registration only. 

**All registrations converted from in-person race registration to virtual race registration will be refunded the difference between the in-person race registration fee and the registration fee of the corresponding virtual race, less any applicable processing fees.

***If the in-person event is cancelled, only those registered for a virtual race experience will receive the 2021 race kit.

 

CAN I DEFER MY ENTRY

Registrations for the Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben, 5K, and Kids One Mile Run are non-refundable. If you cannot participate in a 2021 event due to pregnancy, injury, or military deployment, we offer deferrals to the 2022 running events with proof. The deferral fee is $20.00. Please submit your doctor’s note stating injury/pregnancy or proof of deployment to register@beyondmonumental.org by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday September 10, 2021.

To remain fair and consistent, deferrals do not extend to anyone besides the injured, pregnant, or deployed participant.

DO YOU OFFER A MILITARY DISCOUNT?

To honor those who serve to protect our freedom, Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben and 5K is proud to offer U.S. Military members, veterans and their families 10 percent (10%) off the price at the time of registration. Email a copy of your picture Military ID or a copy of your DD214 to register@beyondmonumental.org to request the discount and we will reply with the promotional code to use when registering.

WHERE AND WHEN IS PACKET PICKUP?

Race bibs and packets will be available at Packet Pickup on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Sterrett Center. The Sterrett Center is located at 8950 Otis Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46216.

We will communicate health and safety guidelines for the Half Marathon at Fort Ben, 5K, and Kids Run as we get closer to the event.

We will not mail race packets and there is no race day packet pickup.

CAN SOMEONE ELSE PICK UP MY PACKET?

Yes. They must present the email that includes your ASSIGNED BIB NUMBER or a copy of your government-issued photo ID. Digital or printed copies of the email and government-issued photo ID are acceptable for packet pickup.

MAY I PICK UP MY PACKET ON RACE DAY?

No, there will be NO race day packet pickup.

WHEN IS GEAR CHECK OFFERED AND WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

Gear Check will be available on race day from 7:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Gear Check is located south of the Start/Finish line at the west end of the food tent.

Bags and markers to write your race number on your bag will be provided at Gear Check. Do not give your items to any volunteer except those at Gear Check. Do not put valuables in your gear check bag. You must have your Race Bib to pick up your bag. Any gear left at the gear check tent after 12:30 p.m. on race day will be donated to a local charity.

IS THERE A TIME LIMIT FOR THE HALF MARATHON?

The time limit is four hours for the Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben. Half Marathon participants must maintain a pace of (approximately) 18:00 per mile.

To ensure the safety of all participants, any participant not maintaining this pace will be asked to retire from the event and be taken back to the race site on an event vehicle.

CAN I CONTINUE RUNNING ON THE COURSE IF I DON’T COMPLETE THE RACE PRIOR TO COURSE CLOSURE?

Continuing on the course after course closure is at your own risk. You will be asked by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to move off the streets to allow for vehicle traffic. No times are recorded after 12:00 p.m. for the half marathon. Finisher medals will be awarded only to those finishing within the specified time limit.

WILL THERE BE A SPLIT MAT IN THE HALF MARATHON?

Yes, there will be a 10K split mat.

WHAT IS ‘KILL THE HILL’ AND HOW DO I COMPETE?

The Kill the Hill challenge can be found along the half marathon course between miles 10 and 11. It is a ~320-meter segment that starts around Delaware Lake and follows Harrison Trace Trail east uphill. There will be timing mats at the start and end of this segment for participants to show off their speed. Awards will be given to the top finishers in the Youth, Open, and Masters divisions.

Overall winners and age group winners are not eligible to win the Kill the Hill awards as well.

CAN I LEAVE THE COURSE AND COME BACK?

You will be disqualified if you leave the course.

WILL EACH RACE BE CERTIFIED?

The Indy Half Marathon and 5K are both USATF certified courses.

  • Half Marathon certification number: IN13044TDK
  • 5K course certification number: IN09001TDK

All USATF COMPETITION RULES apply.

WHAT ITEMS MAY I PARTICIPATE WITH?

You must wear your bib at all times. You WILL NOT be allowed to participate in the Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben or 5K with animals, bicycles, baby joggers, strollers, roller skates, inline skates, or any other wheeled devices.

CAN I WEAR A HEADSET DURING THE RACE?

For safety purposes, we recommend you do not wear a headset so you can hear important information along the course.

WILL I RECEIVE A FINISHERS MEDAL?

You will receive a finishers medal if you complete the Half Marathon or 5K before the course closure. You will not receive a finishers medal if you complete the race after the course closure or if you do not complete the race.

HOW CAN I PERSONALIZE THE BACK OF MY MEDAL WITH MY NAME AND FINISHING TIME?

We are pleased to offer Etags from PR Medal Engravers. Commemorate your achievement with a personalized Etag for your medal. Pre-purchase your Etag for $15.00 when you register online and PR Medal Engravers will mail it to you after the race. Log in to your BEYOND MONUMENTAL PARTICIPANT ACCOUNT and PRE-PURCHASE YOUR ETAG no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT FOR THE HALF MARATHON?

Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben participants must be 10 years of age or older on race day.

WILL THE INDY HALF MARATHON AT FORT BEN HAVE PACE LEADERS?

Our pace team is coordinated by Matt Ebersole, director of the Monumental Training Program and elite athlete coordinator.

Paces covered will be, at a minimum: 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45. 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30, and 3:55.

WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT BEING AN ELITE RUNNER?

HOW WILL THE STARTING AREA AND CORRALS WORK ON RACE MORNING?

The Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben and Indy Half 5K at Fort Ben will use six starting corrals with a wave start. What does a wave start mean?

  • The start will be broken into five separate “waves” of participants, based on expected finish times provided during registration.
  • You are allowed to move into a corral farther back from your assigned corral if you would like to start with a person in a different corral. You cannot move forward to a different corral. ​ 
  • To qualify for the preferred start for the A corral, male participants must be able to run under 1:35 and female participants must be able to run under 1:45. 
    • You must submit a link to a verifiable result run between 2019-2021.
    • The deadline to submit proof of times is 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday September 10, 2021.
  • The event is chip timed so your official time will remain unaffected.

*Start procedures subject to change based on needs at the time of the race.

CAN I HAVE A FRIEND OR COACH WHO IS NOT REGISTERED RUN WITH ME THROUGHOUT ANY PORTION OF THE RACE?

No. All participants must be registered and wearing their assigned bib number. If you are looking for pacing assistance, we provide our Monumental Pace Team to help you reach your goals.

WHERE WILL WATER BE AVAILABLE?

For the half marathon, water stops are located at miles 2, 4, 5.5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and finish.

For the 5K there is one water stop around 1.5 miles.

WILL ENERGY GELS BE AVAILABLE ON THE COURSE?

Yes, energy gels will be available along the Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben course near mile 8.4.

WHAT IF I HAVE TO DISCARD SOMETHING ON THE COURSE?

Beyond Monumental is committed to respecting the neighborhoods, parks, and communities that host our events.

No littering is permitted on the course. Discard wrappers, bottles, water cups, energy gels, and any other disposable items near the fourteen (14) aid stations along the course or with any course marshal/volunteer – easily identified by their safety orange volunteer shirt or gray colored winter hats.

Participants not adhering to this rule may be disqualified from the event.

*Please note, ‘throw away’ clothes are to be discarded in the same manner along the course. We will collect and donate items to a local shelter, WHEELER MISSION.

HOW MANY RESTROOMS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE COURSE?

Port-o-lets will be available on the course, approximately every three miles. You will also pass Fort Harrison State Park restroom facilities several times while inside the park. We ask that you please be kind and courteous to the Indianapolis residents and neighborhoods.

WHAT IF I NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION DURING THE RACE?

Medical personnel will be stationed on the course to provide medical assistance.

For medical emergencies, an ambulance will be called to transport the participant to a local hospital. The participant is responsible for any medical transportation fees. ​

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that you write any medical conditions, medications, allergies, and emergency contacts on the backside of your race bib. You must wear your race bib at all times during the event.

WHERE CAN I SHOWER AFTER THE RACE?

YMCA access for post-race showers is not available this year. Please plan accordingly.

WHAT IS THE KIDS’ ONE MILE RUN AND WHAT TIME DOES IT BEGIN?

The Kids One Mile Fun Run is a fun chance to get kids involved with the event. It is a casual race where kids can run/walk in an organized event. It will start at 11:00 a.m. All participants will report to Lawton Loop East Drive and Otis Avenue near the finish line.

WHERE DO I REGISTER FOR THE 5K THROUGH THE APEX BENEFITS MONUMENTAL KIDS MOVEMENT??

Registration is now open to Lawrence Township students. Upon completion of the APEX BENEFITS MONUMENTAL KIDS PROGRAM, students will have the opportunity to participate in the 5K at the Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben. Contact info@beyondmonumental.org for the registration link or any questions.

COULD BAD WEATHER OR OTHER CONDITIONS CANCEL THE RACE?

Extreme weather (such as lightning, high winds, snow, ice, extreme temperature, etc.) could cancel the event. There are also instances of other emergency situations (such as power outages, city-wide alerts, etc.) that could affect the start, continuance, and/or completion of the event or select races. We will provide updates about event/race delay(s) or cancellation(s) as quickly as possible through IHM Facebook (facebook.com/indianapolishalfmarathon) and Twitter (@IndyHalfand5k) and our website (www.indyhalfmarathon.com).

WHAT HAPPENS IF EXTREME WEATHER HAPPENS DURING THE EVENT?

If extreme weather or an emergency situation becomes an issue, the Command Group will meet and determine the status/future of the event. Depending on the situation, the event may be delayed or cancelled. Information will be relayed to the race committee. Participants will be notified along the course by course monitors and race officials. Participants will be required to use their best judgment, based on the situation, as to the next best course of action.

IF THE RACE IS CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER WILL REFUNDS OR TRANSFERS BE ALLOWED?

There will be no refunds or transfers should the event be cancelled due to extreme weather or other emergencies. For additional cancellation information, please review the COVID-19 Cancellation policy.

WHAT ARE THE AWARDS FOR EACH AGE GROUP?

HOW CAN I CHECK MY RESULTS?

There are many different ways to check your results after you finish. Visit the Results Tent to receive a print out of your finish time and your splits. Results will be listed by finish time and include your overall place and age group place.

*Results may be moved to an entirely online process depending upon social distancing requirements.

WHERE WILL THE RACE AWARD CEREMONIES BE LOCATED?

We will not have an awards ceremony; awards will be mailed after the results are finalized. All finishers in the Half Marathon, 5K, and Kids One Mile Fun Run will receive a finishers medal.

WILL THERE BE ANY FOOD AVAILABLE AFTER THE RACE?

We plan to host a post-race celebration again in 2021, which is included in the registration fee for participants!

Once you’ve crossed the finish line, come join us for a beautiful Indiana fall morning! We will have food, drinks, and fall fun available just south of the Start/Finish Line area. Enjoy a slice of pizza from Jockamo’s Pizza, a hoagie from Hoagies & Hops, and/or a donut from Long’s Donuts. Beverages will be available for purchase from Sun King and White Claw (ID required).
